Sony confirms PlayStation Store shutdown for PS3, PS Vita: Check details

  1. Sony is closing the PlayStation Store shutter for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita this year.
  2. Sony’s PS3 originally launched in November 2006, and more than 80 million units of the console were sold in total.
  3. The PS3 and PSP’s stores will officially close on July 2, while the PS Vita store will shut down on August 27.

Sony is officially closing its PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 on July 2nd, with the store shuttering for Vita devices on August 27th. The shutdowns mean you’ll no longer be able to purchase digital copies of games or DLC for the PS3 and Vita.

Additionally, it will also retire the remaining purchase functionality for PSP (PlayStation Portable) devices on July 2.

The change will make new digital content inaccessible on these devices. You will still be able to re-download already purchased games, videos, and media, this decision will prevent you from buying new games, in-game purchases, downloadable content, or videos for either system. You also won’t be able to redeem PSN wallet fund vouchers.

In an email sent to PlayStation customers, the company says:

It’s closing the respective PlayStation stores “in an effort to focus our resources for PlayStation Store on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which will enable us to enhance the customer experience even further. We thank you for your support on these platforms throughout the years.”

Sony also specified that these store closures will not affect any user’s PlayStation Now subscription or their access to PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita titles, they claimed through their PlayStation Plus subscription. Those may still be re-downloaded as long as their PlayStation Plus membership remains current.

For those who want a refund of any PSN wallet funds left over after store access closes, Sony will issue refunds and will provide more information later.

Even though Sony ended PS3 production four years ago, the console sold 87 million units during its 11 years on the market, which means players will have had over a decade to build up a library of titles.
