Google Meet extends ‘unlimited’ video calls for free Gmail accounts to June

Highlights:

  • Google today announced that it is making Meet, its video meeting tool, available for free to everyone.
  • The company has extended free unlimited video calls for personal Gmail account users till June 30, 2021.
  • Google Meet also introduced advanced safety locks to block unknown users from the meeting.

Keeping in view the need generated during the coronavirus pandemic, Google had made its premium video conferencing solution Google Meet free for all Gmail users, with a limit of up to 24 hours for a single meeting.

You will also get screen sharing, real-time captions, and the new tiled layout, that company introduced only a few days ago. Google users can access Meet using their Gmail account itself, on the web as well as on the app. They can choose to start a new meeting or join an existing one if they have been invited.

Earlier, Google had noted that the free version of Google Meet for personal Gmail accounts, which gives unlimited calls will be restricted to 60 minutes starting September last year. This deadline was then extended to March 31, 2021. Now, Google has further extended the unlimited calls for personal Gmail accounts until June 30, 2021.

In a statement, the tech giant said:

They felt that with the holiday season around the corner, lesser travel due to precautions and precedents of important events taking place over video calls, it was important to extend its free Meet calls further.

There is a 24-hour technical limitation that most should not encounter, but this is definitely a turnaround for the company to make Meet a competitive offering for regular users. Meet operates on a secure foundation, keeping users safe, data secure, and information private including between the company and users.

Last month, Google Meet launched new features for teachers and students. It rolled out features that will enable teachers to mute all students, moderation tools, end meetings for everyone, among others. So now, continue your meetings on Google Meet without any worry!
